Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship Catches Fire near Jamaica

Office_Fire_ExtinguisherA fire broke out aboard Royal Caribbean Freedom of the Seas Wednesday injuring one crew member. Passengers were moved to assembly stations but not evacuated.

The incident happened at about 9:30 a.m. while the cruise ship was pulling into the port of Falmouth, Jamaica. Royal Caribbean International said on its Twitter page that the fire started in a mechanical area and was extinguished a short time later. The passengers were told to put on their life jackets and gather on the deck. The fire suppression system for the vessel was immediately activated and the fire did not spread. Photos posted on social media showed a thick plume of grey smoke coming from an upper deck of the 154,407-ton Freedom of the Seas. Continue reading

Carnival Granted U.S. Approval for Travel to Cuba

800px-Carnival_Cruise_ShipCarnival Corporation will sail to Cuba in a new deal, the world’s largest cruise ship company announced Tuesday. Princess, the parent company of Carnival, will launch seven-day “people-to-people” travel to the island beginning in May 2016. Cruise Lines Cancel Puerto Vallarta Port Calls Due to Violence

800px-DCL_Disney_Wonder_at_Port_CanveralA few cruise lines have canceled port calls in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico this week, after reports of armed violence between drug gangs and local authorities.

Disney Cruise Line pulled the May 12 port call in Puerto Vallarta from Disney Wonder’s schedule. The Wonder spent a day at sea instead. The cruise line distributed a letter to the passengers aboard the Disney Wonder which is operating a two-week Panama Canal cruise. Continue reading

Royal Caribbean’s Splendour to Become Thomson Discovery

Thomson takes Royal Caribbean’s Splendour of the Seas and renames it Discovery.

splendour of the seas thomson discoveryRoyal Caribbean prepares to hand over Splendour of the Seas to Thomson Cruises. The UK-based company and subsidiary of TUI Group announced that when the vessel joins their fleet next year, they will rename it to Thomson Discovery.

After the acquisition, the former Royal Caribbean’s cruise ship will replace Island Escape, so Thomson’s fleet will keep the total number of its ships to five. Continue reading
